“More people die from eating disorders than from any other mental illness.”
DCT’s Young Adult Relevant Drama (YARD) unravels America’s obsession with food in a humorous and poignant look at the dangerous and baffling world of eating disorders in girls and boys. Made possible in part through the National Endowment for the Arts and the M.R. & Evelyn Hudson Foundation, DCT presents the world premiere of EAT (It’s Not about Food) by resident playwright Linda Daugherty, from April 11 through May 11, 2008 in the Studio Theater at DCT’s Rosewood Center for Family Arts.
EAT (It’s Not about Food) candidly explores causes and warning signs, takes a hard look at the influences of society and the media, and tells individual stories of young people struggling with this epidemic and too often tragic problem. Nancy Schaeffer, DCT’s Education Director and director of the play, comments, “We are very excited to present another play dealing with topics that are important to teenagers and their families. Linda Daugherty is exceptionally skilled at creating an artistic and entertaining play with a serious issue at its core.”
Linda Daugherty is an award-winning playwright whose work has appeared in prominent theaters and colleges throughout the United States, including The Kennedy Center and New York University. DCT continues the young adult initiative with EAT (It’s Not about Food), reaffirming its commitment to presenting challenging, edgy and thought-provoking material for teen audiences.
Although there is much to laugh about in EAT (It’s Not about Food), the play paints a very realistic picture of the overwhelming loneliness, self-hatred and devastating consequences that affect individuals with an eating disorder. Since some audience members may identify very closely with the emotional pain experienced by characters in the play, DCT intends to follow-thru by providing a safe opportunity to talk about these sensitive issues in a guided post show discussion. By collaborating with The Elisa Project, a 501(c)(3) organization that promotes healthy living and awareness of the signs of disordered eating through educational programs and resources, DCT hopes to help patrons leave the theater feeling educated and empowered.
“This exceptional play will forever change the way you look at the world of Eating Disorders and those who struggle to regain control of their lives.” ~Dr. Elizabeth Hughes, Executive Director, The Elisa Project
“EAT will motivate individuals to do things differently in their own lives. Hopefully, it will motivate a nation to stand up and make real changes on behalf of our kids.” ~Susan Sugarman, MD, MPH, FAAP, FSAM Girls to Women Health and Wellness, PA
