So begins the classic book by Dante Alighieri. This book is considered one of the greatest pieces of literature. Dante tells the story of his guided journey into the deep recesses of hell. As he voyages through each circle, going deeper into the earth, he encounters a myriad of damned souls; and as he witnesses their ghastly punishments he learns the cause of their torment. As he travels further he also encounters obstacles that might trap him for an eternity. This adaptation for the stage presents this classic story in a new light, with extensive choreography and with modernized language, making it accessible to those who have only heard of the book. Alejandro de la Costa’s adaptation captures the raw intensity, violence, sexuality, and horror that has stunned readers for hundreds of years. The actors in this production through the use of their bodies become the beasts, the devils, the sinners, and the towering bodies and rivers of flesh that Dante encounters.
